VTC Design Alumni Association (VTCDAA) organised a "Natural Dye Hand-painted Cushion Case Workshop” on 19 August 2023. The workshop was instructed by Mr Kinyan Lam, a fashion designer cum HKDI alumnus, allowing participants to experience the design and creative process of natural dyeing, revealing the secrets of plant-based dyes, and learning the fabric maintenance techniques. Some natural plant dye materials were used during the workshop such as sophora flower and gallnuts. Participants were able to unleash their creativity through hand-painted design to create one-of-a-kind cushion cases. The allure of natural dyeing lies in the fact that each piece carries a distinct effect, setting it apart from mass-produced chemically dyed fabrics. The techniques imbue textiles with a natural feeling.
The workshop covered essential knowledge about plant dyeing and proper dye selection; extraction and colouring were demonstrated as well. The meticulous process requires precision and patience to create vibrant colours. In addition, hand-painted pattern techniques were taught, enabling alumni to create their cushion cases with creativity and personal style.
The workshop fostered interaction and exchange among alumni from diverse backgrounds and interests. It provided a collaborative environment for alumni to connect, share ideas, and inspire each other. This interaction not only enriched their creative experience but also facilitated cross-industry communication.
Natural dyed fabrics not only enhance aesthetics but also strengthen our connection with nature. VTCDAA would like to organise more natural dyeing workshops in the future to pass on the technique and knowledge, allowing more people to experience the allurement and creative possibilities of natural dyeing while fostering alumni connections.
